emergency help

Typical Singaporeans. How typical can they be?

Imagine someone has fainted in the public. What is the first thing that comes to your mind? Call the ambulance straight away.

But, do you want to know what had happened just now?

I was chilling out with Zea, Nana, their friends and my boyfriend outside downtown east mccafe. There was this group of friends about to leave the place when one of their friends suddenly fainted on the pavement. I didn't know that somebody (a girl) actually fainted until Nana told me. My back was facing them at that point of time. What i only saw was, her friends carried her to one side and lay her down in supine position, with her head on top of her friend's lap. Which, i can gurantee, it's not the correct way to do it.

Assuming that one of her friend's has already called an ambulance, i totally ignored them. Furthurmore, i can't be of much help because i'm still a student nurse. I have not learned all these things completely yet in school. Although i may know a bit of CPR, i still don't dare to do it because this concerns someone's life. I don't even own the licence yet.

So yeah. I just ignored and continued whatever i was doing. We talked and talked and talked.

Then, boyfriend came to realise that it's been nearly an hour that girl had fainted when he looked at the time. True enough, they were still there, fanning her, prolly waiting for miracle to happen. There were obviously passerbys, but they did nothing to help. I don't even know where are all the downtown east staffs were. The mccafe staffs only provided them water. In the end, my friends pestered me to go and try and help them - just because i'm in nursing.

I got irritated and eventually went to "help" them. Before that, i went to call Kak Nadiah, asked for some advice if she knows any. She was also unsure about it but she did manage to give a few. I was seriously, really reluctant to go. Seriously. But to think of it again, this is going to be my job in 3 yr's time. If i don't start having that confidence in myself right now, when will the day be?

And so, i approached the girl's friend, asked her what causes her to faint and stuffs. (I tried to apply Critical Thinking in it.) Good thing she was still breathing. I went to check her radial pulse. It was rather weak. Her face was also pucat. And so, i quickly advised her friend to call the ambulance straight away. But in the end, the girl's sister called for a cab instead - which i have no freaking idea why! Somehow, it rather pissed me off to see them not taking any actions immediately. The basics of first aid pun tak tau. Kalau dorang masih budak budak tak pasal. Ni dah tua bangka seh.

But whatever it is, i just hope the girl is okay.

And somehow, it made me feel as though i've had saved someone's life - only that i didn't. Cos i did what i could do and nothing much. But i seriously wish i could be THAT useful, you know. I really pity that girl. =/
